Bank Director Sam Hoax

Description:

Email users are sending this hoax message via email. It is soliciting from the email recipient the favor of becoming a partner to an illegal transaction and offering some cash reward for the recipient's positive reply. Trend Micro advises all email users to not propagate this email, which is a hoax.

Original Message:

I am DR KOFI HENEKOU, the director in charge of auditing and accounting section of International Bank of Africa Cotonou Republic of Benin in West Africa with due respect and regard.

I have decided to contact you on a business transaction that will be very beneficial to both of us at the end of the transaction .

During our investigation and auditing in this bank, my department came across a very huge sum of money belonging to a deceased person who died on November 16 in a plane crash and the fund has been dormant in his account with this Bank without any claim of the fund in our custody either from his family or relation before our discovery to this development.

Although personally, I keep this information secret within myself and partners to enable the whole plans and idea be Profitable and successful during the time of execution. The said amount was us$14M (fourteen million united states dollars).

As it may interest you to know, I got your impressive information through my good friends who works with chamber of commerce on foreign business relations here in Cotonou-Benin. Description:

This email scam invites recipients to forward the email to as many people as possible in order to get paid a certain amount of money for every person the email was sent to. If that recipient sends it to others, the original sender will also get additional payment. The sender is also entitled to get a free meal certificate to Outback Steakhouse.

This incredible chance, however, builds up on false and fantastic hopes and is actually a hoax. Recipients are advised to delete it and not forward it to other users.

Area Code 809 Hoax

Type: Scams and Shams

Description:

This email, which is made to appear to have been sent out by AT&T, purports that a scam is being perpetrated by certain phone companies through the long distance code 809. It alleges that dialing this long distance number can leave callers with unexpectedly huge bills. It explains that the code dials to the Bahamas and does not operate under US regulations.

The code 809, which allegedly dials to the British Virgin Islands, actually belongs to the Dominican Republic.

While AT&T denies ever sending out this email, the scam it describes is apparently true, leading AT&T to issue the following statement regarding the 809 Area Code Urban Legend.

If you receive such an email, keep in mind that while the modus operandi described does indeed take place, you should also be aware of the following:

    - Not all phone numbers with 809 in the area code is part of this scam; most 809 numbers are legitimate, ordinary numbers.
    - This scam has been used with area codes aside from 809.
    - It is not, in fact, $2400 per minute; the figures involved with this scam have been greatly exaggerated over the years.
    - The average US consumer is unlikely to encounter the scam itself.

We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said "Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to us quickly. Have something important to tell you." Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809. We did not respond.

Then this week, we received the following email:

Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284 AND 876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the U. S. This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call. Be sure you read this and pass it on to all your friends and family so they don't get scammed!

MAJOR SCAM:

Don't respond to Emails, phone calls, or web pages which tell you to call an "809" Phone Number. This alerts you to a scam that is spreading -extremely- quickly can easily cost you $2400 or more, and is difficult to avoid unless you are aware of it. This scam has also been identified by the National Fraud Information Center and is costing victims a lots of money.

There are lots of different permutations of this scam.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

You will receive a message on your answering machine or your pager, which asks you to call a number beginning with area code 809. The reason you're asked to call varies. It can be to receive information about a family member who has been ill, to tell you someone has been arrested, died, to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc. In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the U. S., you will apparently be charged $2425 per-minute. Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24,100.00.

WHY IT WORKS:

The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (The Bahamas). The 809 area code can be used as a "pay-per-call" number, similar to 900 numbers in the U. S. Since 809 is not in the U. S., it is not covered by U. S. regulations of 900 numbers, which require that you be notified and warned of charges and rates involved when you call a pay-per-call" number.

There is also no requirement that the company provide a time period during which you may terminate the call without being charged. Further, where as many U. S. homes that have 900 number blocking to avoid these kinds of charges, do not work in preventing calls to the 809 area code.

We recommend that no matter how you get the message, if you are asked to call a number with an 809 area code that you don't recognize just disregard the message. Be wary of email or calls asking you to call an 809 area code number. It's important to prevent becoming a victim of this scam, since trying to fight the charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to help them become aware of this scam.

Details:

This Joke program displays a message box in the desktop with a message that the Windows and its contents are being deleted and transferred to the Recycle Bin. The user is not able to press the "cancel" or the "close" button. The message box disappears after the animation is finished.

The message box is a fake since it is just an animated image. If the user checks the c:\Windows directory, all the files will still be there and the Recycle Bin folder will not contain the deleted files.

OLDER PEOPLE UNDER FINANCIAL PRESSURE

Thousands of older people across Britain could be putting themselves under unnecessary financial pressure, a new set of figures indicates.

In research conducted by the London School of Economics (LSE) for the British Gas/Help the Aged Partnership, pensioners could be losing out on a total of some 50,000 pounds over the course of their lifetime by not claiming all the money they are entitled to receive. According to the company, about half of all the country's older citizens are eligible to claim enough cash to cover their heating costs and be lifted out of 'fuel poverty.' And as a result of getting such help with their finances, people may find that they are in a better position to meet other demands on their spending, such as mortgages, credit cards, and loan costs. Overall, the LSE suggested that a total of 4.5 billion pounds in unclaimed benefits for older people is lying in government coffers.

Pointing to the typical case of unclaimed benefits, it was suggested that a 65-year-old woman who does not make the most of what she is entitled to, is losing out on some 25 pounds per week. Consequently, such a consumer could be receiving more than 30,000 pounds over the remainder of her expected lifetime. In turn, this is a figure that could greatly reduce the constraints on many consumers' finances, whether this is related to making loan repayments or paying off credit cards.

Meanwhile, getting an extra 50 pounds per week would equate to yet more in additional benefits. However, the study also uncovered that about one in three pensioners do not know where to go to seek help with benefits - a statistic that may indicate that many older people may struggle in receiving advice with their personal finances.

Commenting on the LSE findings, Anna Pearson, spokesperson for the British Gas/Help the Aged Partnership, said: "Our recent research revealed that more than one million older people cut back on food to cover their heating costs. With individual pensioners possibly eligible for up to 50,000 pounds, our message to older people is - you've got to claim it to gain it."

As a result, the partnership has called on the government to bring in an automatic benefit payment scheme for older people, as well as putting more money into face-to-face financial advisory programmes.

Similar concerns were echoed earlier this year. According to Helen Wanless, senior press officer at Age Concern, one in three Britons aged 60 and above are unaware that they are able to receive pension credits. She added that many people found the claiming process to be too complicated, although getting such money could well provide help with money management for many people. According to the Commons public accounts committee, some 1.6 million of the over-60s could be missing out on about 2.1 billion pounds, which is waiting to be claimed. Consequently, Ms Wanless urged that the government must do more in boosting consumers' awareness of such a product. However, even after receiving credits should consumers discover that they still have problems in managing their finances, applying for a cheap loan could be one way in which to provide help with spending.

The same holds true in the U.S. There are many older people who are struggling financially, and they are constantly being worried by the media announcements that Social Security is running out of money, that there will be no Social Security check next month (this was announced by Obama in July), that their Medicare benefits are going to be cut by Congress, and all kinds of other negative media stories (and, after all, aren’t most media stories negative, to get people to continue to watch all those ENDLESS commercials?)! Pity, as people should be able to retire in peace, without all this nonsense being thrown at them, in the name of the Almighty Dollar!

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL SECURITY

In order to address the routine concerns of many regarding the payment of bills, post-retirement, or disability, a federal benefits program was designed in the United States in 1935, known as the Social Securities Act. The program known as the Social Security program, provides disability, retirement, unemployment, and survivor benefits, as well as Medicare. The benefits offered, aim at providing financial support to the citizens of the U.S. who fall under the categories specified within the parameters of the program.

The Social Security Act of 1935, introduced the Social Security system in the U. S. The system caters to the financial needs of the retired citizens who have contributed to the Social Security trust fund for at least 10 years. It also provides benefits to the survivors, in the event of the employee's death. The other benefits offered, cover disability and unemployment.

It is essential for the person to make the regular required contribution to the Social Security Trust Funds through the payroll taxes, to be eligible. By virtue of the provisions of the Federal Insurance Contributions Act or FICA, every worker's income is subject to a tax payment of 12.4% on the first $94,200 earned during the year (this may have been raised, or it may be raised in the future). Half of this amount or 6.2% is paid by the employer, while the other 6.2% is deducted from the salary of the employee. The amount is given to the government. Self-employed people are responsible for paying the full 12.4%. This amount is used to fund the Social Security system.

The system has been designed to benefit those who make the necessary contributions for a period of ten years. There is a credit system incorporated in the scheme, and you can earn a maximum of four credits per year. This means that regardless of the higher limit of your actual earnings, and consequently the quantity of your contribution to the fund, your earnings would entitle you to receive four credits.

The amount of the monthly Social Security check that you would receive after retirement, would be calculated on the basis of your 35 highest income-generating years. You need to apply, to start receiving your Social Security benefits. The best time to do this would be a few months before your actual retirement date. It is not sent automatically, as some people believe!

The Social Security program attempts to pay the retired citizens a pre-determined sum of money, to cover their basic needs. It works as a kind of insurance for the retired people, helping them to cope with financial difficulties and post-retirement.

It is a form of insurance that covers the surviving spouse and children, in case of the employee's death. If the spouse is between 62 to 65 years, 70 to 99 percent of the benefits are payable (this may have changed, too, or it may change in the future). Dependent parents and unmarried children under 18 years are entitled to receive the benefits, too.

Disability that prevents employment opportunity, is also considered for benefits under the Social Security system. Physical and mental disabilities are also covered, and the payment starts five months after proving the disability to the authorities. Because of past abuses to the system, Disability Benefits are harder to receive and get approved now, unfortunately. Many people have to hire an experienced attorney to get them through this paperwork and bureaucratic process.

Under the Social Security system, unemployment benefits are available to those whose unemployment is due to circumstances beyond their control. The program is designed to provide financial relief to the citizens of the U. S. at crucial times.

To get the latest details, you might want to search the Internet or contact the Social Security System directly. Congress is continually looking at this important program; and unfortunately, it has become a “political football,” with both political parties making media statements that Social Security is broke and “needs fixing.” This has been going on for most of the time that Social Security has been established, and it will probably continue to go on in the future, when your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are grown! To get the REAL and TRUE facts, disregard most of these media statements by politicians (even the President, who recently declared that there would BE NO SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS IN AUGUST), and get the facts directly from the Social Security System itself! This is a very unfortunate situation, and it has continued to worry many Senior Citizens, some of whom have had strokes and heart attacks because of this worry about their lack of control over their own finances! Congress and the President should be more responsible than this!

AND YOUR OCCUPATION IS. . .

A few months ago, a lady wrote me, when I was picking up the children at school, another mother I knew well rushed up to me. Emily was fuming with indignation. “Do you know what you and I are?" she demanded. Before I could answer, and I didn't really have one handy, she blurted out the reason for her question. It seemed she had just returned from renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office. Asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. Emily had hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. What I mean is, "explained the recorder, "Do you have a job, or are you just a .....?" "Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a mother." "We don't list 'mother' as an occupation...'housewife' covers it," said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high-sounding title like official Interrogator or Town Registrar. "And what is your occupation?" she probed. What made me say it, I do not know. The words simply popped out.

"I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pompous pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. "Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?" Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn't) in the laboratory and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters (the whole darned family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are in satisfaction rather than just money." There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants - ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (6 months) in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt triumphant! I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another mother.” Motherhood...what a glorious career. Especially when there's a title on the door.

HANDY HOUSEHOLD TIPS

Your guests go home, but the white rings from their wet glasses remain . . .

Head to the kitchen and make a thin paste of salad oil and salt. Using your fingers, gently massage this mixture into the ring. Let it sit for an hour or so, then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Or cover the ring with petroleum jelly, let it sit for a day, and then wipe it off. Next time, remember the coasters!

Your garbage disposal smells like a swamp . . .

Scour food particles from the walls and blades, and remove unpleasant odors with this trick: Combine 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water, pour into ice cube trays, and freeze. Remove the cubes and grind them in the disposal, then flush with water for 1 minute. Grind some lemon or orange peels for a pleasant fragrance, too.

Your dresser or cabinet knob won't stay put . . .

Dip the screw end of the knob into shellac or clear fingernail polish. Screw it in. When it dries, it will be set.

Last week's marinara sauce won't leave your plastic container . . .

Rub the container with a damp cloth dipped in baking soda. Or fill the stained container with water, drop in one or two foaming denture cleaning tablets, wait 20 minutes, and rinse.
